Welcome to Shooting Lincs...

Shooting Lincs... hopes you had a safe and successful shooting season. We would like to thank those shoot syndicates that contacted us throughout the season for help and advice on finding Guns and Beaters, we hope our adverts helped you.

Game shooting imageOn a sad note, however, the season didn't pass off well for some people. A Gamekeeper was shot during a beaters day and we have been informed of a tragic accident involving a beater's trailer and tractor from a South West county in England. Some may say that accidents, whilst unfortunate, are inevitable with what we do, this may be the case to some degree but try explaining that to the loved ones who suffer as a consequence and to the HSE, local authorities and Police who inevitably will follow-up on such incidents.

Many accidents can be avoided. Proper training and assessment at a local level is all that is often needed. For example, Shoot Captains, you know your Guns well, you consider them to be safe, then there is beater's day (beaters please don't take offence)? Some beaters don't shoot from one season to the next, has anyone witnessed how safe they are? In addition, Shoot Captains are often concerned with running the shoot day and the estate often takes care of other issues such as shoot transport etc. Are the tractor drivers qualified to use the vehicles they are towing with? This may well have been the cause of one incident last season. I mention Shoot Captains because in most cases when things go horribly wrong, guess who is usually held responsible? Ask yourself this, can I accept an incident, such as the above, to happen on my shoot where I would be held responsible for the consequences?

If you value your sport, then value the people who work for you and who make it a successful day, don't leave them vulnerable.

If you haven't got a Shoot Safety Plan, now is the time to address the situation. if you are having a summer clay day, why not have your Guns and Beaters Safe Shot Assessed it only takes half an hour?

What To Do With Used Shotgun Cartridges?

Have you ever wondered what to do with all those used cartridges? Do you just throw them away or worse still leave them behind? Now there is an environmentally sound way to dispose of them. A new Lincolnshire company called Agri-Cycle will take your cartridges and recycle them. To use the scheme you need to contact Agri-Cycle at info@agri.cycle.uk.com, they will send you a bag in which you can place your cartridges whereupon they can then be given to Agri-Cycle and turned into useful products. Good hey!

National Vaccination Month

During the month of June, participating vets will be offering reduced vaccination fees for dogs. If you have a working dog you may want to take advantage of this offer. Vets will be offering unvaccinated dogs, or those whose immunity has lapsed, a full course of vaccinations for the price of a booster, this could be a saving of up to £30. To take advantage of this offer log onto www.vaccinationmonth.co.uk and print your offer voucher and find out where your nearest participating vet is located.

Stop Press - Help Needed

Beaters Required

Kevin Rule from NOBS is looking for two beaters with spaniels for a shoot near Louth, North Lincs. The ground would suit spaniels due to its dense nature. The shoot starts on 24th October 2009 and will be held every fortnight. If you are interested in taking up these positions, please e-mail Kevin from this link - e-mail.

Chris Catlin

On a very sad note it is with regret that Shooting Lincs... has been informed of the death of Chris Catlin. The Chairman had known Chris for many years and had always found him supportive of the activities of Shooting Lincs... and the BASC South Lincolnshire Committee.  Chris had supported us with his presence at Taste of Game dinners and had often donated raffle prizes to the cause, namely his 'Game for Gourmets' book, which we reviewed last year. Chris was always a man who would be willing to help and his knowledge of fieldsports and shooting will leave a void in the sport. Our sympathy goes out to his family.

Countryside Thefts

The shooting press has recently highlighted several incidents of gundog theft in the Lincolnshire area. Owners Catalytic converter imageshould be aware that this is happening and take the necessary precautions to ensure their dogs are secured at all times. In some theft cases, the owners were away from their dogs for less than five minutes and they were taken. Also be advised that rural crime is on the increase. With more people unemployed and in need of quick cash, easy pickings are being sought in the countryside. Be vigilant and keep your property, dogs and possessions secure. Dogs should be micro-chipped and as an added deterrent, tattooed. Do you own a 4x4? If yes, keep it close, thieves have been steeling the catalytic converters; the 'Cats' are expensive and contain platinum and rhodium which are valuable materials. As 4x4s have a large ground clearance, thieves can easily slide under and remove the catalytic converter in minutes. Vehicles which have mainly been targeted include the Landover Discovery, Mitsubishi L200, BMW X5, Mitsubishi Shogun and the Ford Ranger. Replacements 'Cats' for these vehicles can cost upwards of £2,000.
